First verify that the domain name is not expired by checking a whois.
When reading a whois, pass by the "Expiration Date" and scroll down to see if there is also a "Record expires on" date.
Always use the "Record expires on" date when it is available. This is an accurate date. The "Expiration Date" may be pushed out an extra year to hold the domain in the registry so you still have the chance to purchase it.
If there is only an "Expiration Date", check also the "Status:". If is shows: "OK", the domain name should be good.
